Modern Wonders of the Crochet and Knitting World

March 11, 2016

Artist Susanna Bauer works with found natural objects such as wood, stone and leaves adding crochet as an embellishment that plays with sculpture and construction. "There is a fine balance in my work between fragility and strength; literally, when it comes to pulling a fine thread through a brittle leaf or thin dry piece of wood," she says.
Knitting and crochet are art forms that I worship. I marvel at the simplicity of a long thin strand of wool or thread, and its transformation into a 3D, space occupying object by virtue of a delicate interlacing of stitches. To me there's no element of hard work or sacrifice, just sheer joy and pleasure at the possibilities. Finding the time is the chore.
Latvian designers MapleApple market their divinely crafted vegetables on Etsy. Mother and daughter have teamed to create a range of funky veggies that some would prefer to hang on their wall, than consume! I'm loving these leeks...
I'm off on a treasure hunt for some scraps of wool and dead leaves. Then I'll dig out my knitting and crochet needles for a bit of a laugh...
