There's nothing more atmospheric and mood-enhancing than a lit candle but what do you do if your candle is smoking or burning too quickly?
Since we started making our own candle range, Wixen Vintage Candles, we've discovered that the single most important thing you should regularly do is trim your wicks!
A candle will smoke if the wick is too long regardless of what type of wax is used or if the candle is scented. In fact, you don't need a large flame to get a good scent throw. And you can literally double the life of your candle by keeping the wick trimmed.
The general rule is to trim the wick to about 1/4" or 64 cm before lighting and do this every couple of hours or so if you plan to keep the candle lit for a long time.
The other tip is to make sure there are no wick trimmings or other debris in the melt pool of wax and to always use a candle snuffer or wick dipper to 'blow out' the flame - birthday cakes excluded, of course.
And needless to say, don't lean too close to a burning candle, especially if you're loaded with hair spray.
So get out those wick trimmers and enjoy longer-lasting, smoke free candlelight!
